Shmira Advisory Report

May 22, 2008 Filed under Advisory Report

Today, Thursday May 22 at approximately 4:30pm a male black entered sweet expressions a candy store on the corner of Kingston Avenue and Union Street and attempted to steal the pushkas (charity boxes) from the counter. The cashier acted quickly and called the Police. The black man realized that the Police were approaching and left the pushkas inside the store. Since he did not leave the store with the goods he technically did not steal and consequently the Police were unable to make an arrest.

This is the same man who Shmira had caught and was arrested by the NYPD this past Tuesday, May 13th for stealing Pushkas from Empire Grill. Shmira is asking all storeowners and residents of Crown Height to be on the alert for this man (see photo below). This man is a repeat offender and we don’t know what else he is capable of.

REMEMBER:

If you are in a store and suspect someone of shoplifting keep in mind that he must leave the store with the merchandise before he can be arrested and charged for theft.

  2. Boruch says:

violence must be stopped in our neighborhood, one way or the other. Too many Yidden have suffered from assailants and thieves already!

  3. yossi says:

    how is he out already?

  4. Reuven says:

I advise people to stay calm. That is half of preventing violence.

  5. EV says:

Thanks for repeatedly pointing out that he’s black. It’s hard to tell in the photograph you included.

  6. To EV says:

Why does the report repeatedly point out that he is a man??
The story talks about two people the black man and the store owner and therefore has to point out who we are talking about.
    OK?

I just read about the dispute between Shomrim and Shmira. From my roost in Massachusetts (although a Brooklyn native), I must say: In more than 3,000 years of Jews fighting Jews, this takes the cake. Haven’t we enough problems with the goyim? You say “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” I have NOTHING to moderate. Post it or delete it (if you cannot tolerate another Jew’s opinion).

It is atrocious how ignorant some of you people that post on this website are. To the editor or auditor of this publication, three words for you “YOU ARE SAD.” AS A BLACK CROWN HEIGHTS RESIDENT I ALSO CHALLENGE YOU TO RESPOND TO MY POSTING. I would be the first to admit like with any community of people there is good and bad. Yes, it is a black man who is alleged to be the perpetrator of this crime, and if he is in fact guilty, shame on him. However I cannot seem to fathom how this story was written in such a manner where you had to emphasize a BLACK MAN and BLACK MALE in the article, in upper case letters, as though the readers of your publication are so mentally challenged that they are not aware of whom you are speaking about, with a picture of the suspect posted under the article. I resent ignorant people like you, who only help to fuel fears. Your tactics are similar to those of George Bush when it comes to Muslims. To further your objectives you spew fear, so the people think “they are all that way”. I am sure many will respond that your encounters with some blacks may have been unpleasant. However, there are many of us blacks like myself that will treat you like a human without looking at your religion, or ethnicity. The tensions of the past continue to boil as some of you radicals, continue to aid in it. You have the blacks who believe that Jews do not like them and they would take every chance to commit savage acts against Jewish community members, whom blacks sometimes look at as people who look down upon them as a black person. I also have to make it clear that I CANNOT and DO NOT speak for every black person, but I will say this, I am black myself and truth be told many of my friends are black, and many do live here in the Crown Heights community.

Then on the other hand you have people like the author who continue to spew the idea that blacks are the ones that are to be feared, and that they have to be careful not to fall victim to blacks. This is 2008 it is time to cut this divisive mentality out on both sides. I have friends that are Jewish and I regard them the same way I regard my black friends. Do you really think I say to myself or to my black friends I am going to go hang out with my JEWISH friend? If for a moment you could not figure this rhetorical question out, the answer is no. I can personally speak for instances where (for the purposes of being descriptive) myself and other young blacks were playing basketball on the basketball hoop that is on the school grounds of Elementary School PS 221 which is located on Empire Blvd. between Troy and Schenectady Avenue and Jewish students from the Yeshiva On Troy Avenue that is between Montgomery Street and Empire Blvd. would come to the school grounds and one or two of them sometimes would come over and shoot some hoops with us. They would be playing with us just fine, without any problems, then suddenly the Rabbi would come onto the school grounds, and immediately call them away from us. Seriously, what type of impression you think acts like that would leave on the impressionable minds of young black kids? I wonder why it is when I walk down Empire Boulevard, and pass by the homes of Jewish community members the children would steer at me like if I am something from outer space? I mean, explain that to me. All I urge for is peace, and to stop continuing ignorant postings like this.

I am sure your website would appreciate the light that could be shined on it if a copy of this post was to be circulated via the through mediums such as myspace, other news publications, and printings around the community.

    To Iamblack;
First of all I would like to apologize for the typo in the article where I spelled black with a capitol “B”. My intensions were NOT to point out that he is black and therefore everyone should watch out for the “BLACK MAN”. I feel as a writer that when there is more than one person involved in the story it must be clear at all points who I am talking about. If the black man had actually committed a crime or was suspected of doing so I would subsequently call him a perpetrator or suspect. In this case however, since he did not actually do anything I simply called him “black man”. I will try to be more sensitive in the future.

“However, there are many of us blacks like myself that will treat you like a human without looking at your religion, or ethnicity”

I myself have many black friends, one of them introduces me, and I him, as “my brother from another mother”. I have no quarrel with anyone, that has to do with their skin color, however when the media writes things like “DA: No deal for Jews accused in attack on black man in Crown Heights” Daily News, May 8th 2008 or “Cops hunt Hasidic EMT in Brooklyn attack on black college student” Daily News, May 16th 2008. Always pointing out JEWS, HASIDIC, forgetting to mention over 30 cases of blacks violently attacking Jews within the past year contrasting the isolated incident of the Jew who allegedly attacked a black student (who allegedly threw rocks). I therefore feel that it is my obligation to clarify the situation as to what is truthfully going on. The truth is most of the crime in this neighborhood is being perpetrated by young black men, that does not mean that we have them arrested or as you say fear them because they are black. Black is only part of who they are. Once again I am not at all advocating that any man should be feared because of his skin color; I am simply stating that because he is a repeat offender and was arrested once before people should keep their eyes open.

As per your experiences at P.S. 221 I cannot say what went on over there since I was not there however I was brought up to always judge everyone with the benefit of the doubt. Have you ever considered that perhaps these Jewish boys were supposed to be in class and that’s why the Rabbi called them away? Or possibly the school has rules, one of them being students are not permitted to leave the premises during school hours.

“I wonder why it is when I walk down Empire Boulevard, and pass by the homes of Jewish community members the children would steer at me like if I am something from outer space? I mean, explain that to me”

Children are children. When I walk past a black child some of them look at me the same way you say certain Jewish children look at you. I am not offended by that since I understand that they don’t know me or are not used to strangers. Some children give that same look to passing cars or trucks. I am not a psychologist nor am I a Pediatrician so I really cannot give you the best explanation, but as far as I understand they are in another world which is hard to comprehend. We can only guess.

“I am sure your website would appreciate the light that could be shined on it if a copy of this post was to be circulated via the through mediums such as myspace, other news publications, and printings around the community”

Everything can be seen in different lights. You choose to translate what you read one way and other people will translate it another way.

    Absolutely no hard feelings,
    The Author
